FROM THE PRESIDENT

MOTHER TO MOTHER EVENT AT THE ETHICAL SOCIETY

Mother to Mother is a conversation with black mothers about “the talk” they must have with their sons because of the racism that still exists in our society.  Everyone I have talked with that has attended one of these talks have come away very moved with a deeper understanding of the need for us to finally eliminate the racism that we seem to feel comfortable denying exists in our society.  The talk is free and open to the public at the Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Rd., Tuesday February 10 at 6 p.m.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT              JANUARY 2015

We are proud that Deb Lavender is the new Missouri State Representative for the 90th Congressional District.  Our club has supported Deb in her efforts to win this seat.  Members of the club have knocked on doors, made telephone calls, planned and participated in fund raisers, and donated funds to her campaign.  And it all paid off!

That is not to say the club was the reason she won.  Deb is a tireless worker who was able to assemble a great group of people who support and worked with her to make this happen.  She is a great example of what hard work, perseverance, and good political skills can accomplish.

We can be sure our area will be well represented with Deb in the House.

But winning was just the first challenge Deb has to face.  She is now part of a chamber that has 116 Republicans to 47 Democrats.  The ratio in the Senate is 25 Republicans to only 9 Democrats.  She has proven she can work with others regardless of their political affiliation but that does not mean the Republicans will feel the need to work with her.  They control the Missouri Legislature and do not need Democrats to pass the laws they want.  The Republicans need 109 votes in the House and 23 votes in the Senate to override a gubernatorial veto.  They have that and more.

The best way for us to help Deb and the other Democratic elected officials is to build our club with our eye on the 2016 elections.  It is not too early to start to build our club into a more powerful organization that will have the ability to help our political friends successfully do the job we have elected them to do.

Our club meets the fourth Thursday of each month with programs that provide you with valuable information and opportunities to help make a better Missouri.  Your participation can make a difference.  Come, join, and help us be more effective at being a positive force in this area.

Dennis Roach

President, Bonhomme Township Democratic Club
